Questions to ask before joining a travel business

A love of travel is a good starting point. Before paying to join a business, make sure you understand what you will do, what it costs and who will help you learn.

What should I check before joining a travel business?

Ask for the initial and monthly costs, what training and practical support are included, and how your commission share is calculated and paid. Clarify who handles customer care, booking changes and cancellations, and what happens if you leave. Compare the written answers with the time and budget you can commit.

What would your day-to-day work involve?

Ask someone to walk you through a typical customer enquiry: understanding the brief, researching options, preparing a quote, taking the booking through the approved system and handling follow-up questions. Enjoying holidays and providing a travel service are connected, but they are different activities.

Discuss how you would fit training, customer conversations and administration around your existing commitments. Find out who looks after an urgent customer issue when you are unavailable.

The National Careers Service travel-agent profile provides an independent introduction to the occupation and routes into it. An employed role and a self-employed business opportunity have different expectations; clarify which you are considering.

What will you pay and how will you earn?

Request a written breakdown of the initial payment, recurring charges and any optional extras. Include likely spending on marketing, your own equipment and any additional services you expect to use. Check what remains payable in a month with no bookings.

Ask for a worked example of a booking: the customer’s holiday price, supplier commission, your share, any deductions and when payment would reach you. A headline commission percentage does not, by itself, explain your take-home income.

  • Is commission calculated before or after particular costs?
  • When is it paid: at booking, after travel, or on another schedule?
  • What happens to commission if the booking changes or is cancelled?
  • Are payments from optional team building separate from booking income?

Unlocked’s joining-cost and training page sets out the published fees and support. Confirm the current terms with the community team. There is no guaranteed income.

What does support look like in practice?

Ask what happens in your first weeks: which systems you learn, where the training lives, how you practise and who checks that you are ready to manage a booking. A useful training conversation should go beyond a list of supplier names.

Find out how to ask a question, when support is available and who handles booking problems. Discuss the difference between community encouragement, practical mentoring and the agency’s operational responsibilities.

Meet the people you will learn alongside. You can explore Unlocked’s mentors and community experiences, then ask questions relevant to your own circumstances.

What should you clarify before deciding?

Ask for the agreement and identify the business you are contracting with. Clarify who receives customer money, what protection applies to the specific arrangements you would sell, and who deals with complaints. Avoid assuming that a logo or a general description answers every booking-specific question.

Understand cancellation terms, any notice period, ongoing commitments and what happens to bookings or unpaid commission if you leave. Keep the written answers so you can compare options at your own pace.

You do not need to decide during the first conversation. Make a short list of anything still unclear and ask the community team to talk it through.
